Evidence Tier: Preclinical / Limited Pilot Data — BPC-157 is a 15-amino acid pentadecapeptide derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. It has been extensively studied in animal models for tissue repair, cytoprotection, and wound healing.
Overview
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic peptide consisting of 15 amino acids. It is a partial sequence of body protection compound (BPC) that is found naturally in human gastric juice. The peptide has been studied since the 1990s, primarily in animal models, for a wide range of tissue-healing and cytoprotective properties.
Mechanism of Action
According to a 2025 narrative review published in PMC (PMC12446177), BPC-157's mechanisms include:
- VEGFR2 Activation: Promotes angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) via vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 signaling
- Nitric Oxide Pathways: Modulates NO system, contributing to vasodilation and tissue repair
- FAK-Paxillin Pathway: Enhances cell migration and wound closure
- Growth Factor Modulation: Upregulates EGF, NGF, and other repair-associated growth factors
- Anti-inflammatory Effects: Reduces inflammatory markers in various tissue injury models
Key Research Findings
Animal Studies
BPC-157 has demonstrated efficacy in over 100 animal studies covering:
- Tendon, ligament, and muscle repair (Achilles tendon transection models)
- Gastrointestinal mucosal protection (gastric ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease models)
- Bone fracture healing acceleration
- Peripheral nerve regeneration
- Skin wound closure and burn healing
Limited Human Data
A pilot study reported 58% sustained pain relief at >6 months for knee pain (n=12-58 across cohorts). Another small study reported 83.3% symptom resolution for interstitial cystitis. However, these studies have significant limitations including small sample sizes and lack of placebo controls.

Regulatory Status
FDA: Category 2 (under review). Scheduled for FDA Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) evaluation on July 23-24, 2026.
WADA: Banned in competition and out of competition under S0 (Non-Approved Substances).
Safety Considerations
No serious adverse effects have been reported in the published animal literature. Human safety data is extremely limited. The long-term effects of exogenous BPC-157 administration remain unknown. The 2025 PMC review notes that most claims regarding BPC-157 are extrapolated from animal data and should be interpreted with caution.
